Five Qualities of a Good Security Guard

By March 19, 2019 No Comments

The role of a security guard can be equally challenging and rewarding. Security staff regularly risk their own personal safety to keep other people and their properties safe. Their job requires manning premises and patrolling property to protect any individuals on site and prevent any dangerous situations from escalating. They also work to thwart any attempts at crime.

At Leisure Guard Security, we’re always keen to expand our team of SIA-licensed, experienced and driven security guards and supervisors in Greater Manchester and the North West of England. Here are some of the qualities that we look for in our security guards, other than training and an SIA license which is required by law:

  • An ability to interact with different kinds of people: Security guards are required to engage with many different people when they’re on the job. Other than being good at the job itself, it is important that the individual is people orientated.
  • An eagle eye: It is crucial that a security guard is able to pay attention to detail. The job requires keeping a vigilant eye on your surroundings and remaining alert. Guards should pay attention to all the details that others may overlook, and able to detect any hint of safety issues or potential criminal activity.
  • Ability to deal with any physical challenges: It is important that the individual is physically fit enough to deal with any issues that may arise on the job. For instance, if there is an attempted crime and the person begins to get violent, the security guard must be able to deal with the situation and protect others.
  • A calm presence and a cool head: This is vital in case any chaotic situations arise where patience and a level head is required.
  • Communication skills: A great security guard can communicate effectively with all kinds of people as this can be crucial for handling a difficult situation. They may also need to report incidents accurately, so written communication should be effective as well.
